You need the software and a database to begin. You don't have to have a GPS voice data logger to use
Gilbert 21 - it can be used to enter and manage biological records without one.
Download the latest software:
Gilbert 21 version 3
Version 3 of Gilbert 21 requires version 4,0 of the .NET framework. If you need to install
that, it can be obtained
here:
.NET framework version 4.0.
Gilbert 21 can give you a lot of help by matching grid references to
location names. To make use of that feature, you should download and
import some
place name (gazetteer) files
before you start.
Gilbert 21 can select records based on the boundary of an area described in a
boundary file. You can create your own but some particularly
useful
boundary files are available for download.
Evernote users who are having difficulty playing AMR sound files in Gilbert 21,
can download the the relevant ffplay.exe utility from the links below,
unzip to a convenient folder and set the path to the file on the options dialog.
Gilbert will then use ffplay to play these files, rather than the default
program associated with the AMR file extension on the computer.
You can also download a sample of the files
that are produced by the Visiontac VGPS-900 voice data logger to see how Gilbert
21 works with them.
To learn how to get started quickly with Gilbert 21, see the
quickstart instructions.
For the download and install instructions for the Android app, goto the
G21App page.
Google Earth
is a great tool to help you get the most out of Gilbert 21. This free GIS
software allows Gilbert 21 to display
records spatially. (Note that you don't need the Google
browser - Chrome.)
SQLite Studio is free software
which allows you explore and manage SQLite database files. You don't need
this in order to use Gilbert 21, but it may be of interest to those who
want to look under the bonnet of the database.
